Vector Tanks

simon | Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

This game reminds me of Spectre, a 1991 game for the Mac. You can’t go wrong with tank combat and vector graphics.  And the developer nailed the controls.  You drive the tank by sliding two throttles on each side of the screen, one for each tank tread.  Both forward makes the tank go forward, pull one half way back and you will turn, one forward and one completely backwards makes the tank rotate in place, just like a real tank!!!  You get to shoot enemy tanks and jeeps.  You can pick up a shield, a nuke, or a rapid fire bonus.

Low Grav Racer

This game is like Wipeout on the PlayStation or F-Zero on Nintendo.  It is a futuristic racer with weapon pickups and enemy combat.  Low Grav Racer 2 is temporarily free, there is a free demo of LGR1, they are usually $2.

GeoDefense Swarm, iPhone’s Best Tower Defense Game

simon | Art, Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I used to the think GeoDefense was the best tower defense game on the iPhone. Most tower defense games only allow you to place your towers in predefined places or prevent you from impeding the path of incoming enemies. GeoDefense was a great tower defense game with great graphics, fun tower types and satisfying tower upgrades. The sequel gives you the freedom to place your towers any where on the playing field, creating interesting game play variations. You can build all your towers in a line forcing the horde to go around. Funneling the horde down a path of shock towers which slow the enemy down only to be obliterated by a fully upgraded laser tower is immensely satisfying. This game is not for beginners to the tower defense genre. It is very challenging, you will not beat this game easily. You will spend days trying to beat hard levels only to have the last enemy penetrate your defenses.  GeoDefense and GeoDefense Swarm are each $2 in the App Store.

The tower types are:

  • blaster – your basic gun tower, when fully upgraded it is a long range sniper tower
  • laser – beams of light damage multiple enemies in it’s path, devastating when fully upgraded
  • missile – while slower than a blaster the splash damage of a missile hurts nearby enemies
  • thumper – shock waves pulsate outwards and damage nearby enemies
  • shock – shock towers slow down an enemy, works well in combination with other towers

GeoDefense Swarm

On this level I have forced the creeps down a straight path so I can beam them all at once with my laser tower.

Auditorium for iPhone

simon | Art, Flash, Games, Software, Tech, music | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

The best Flash game ever, Auditorium, is now available for iPhone. You can play it on your computer for free by visiting playauditorium.com. Auditorium is a unique game, a musical puzzle, and translates nicely to the iPhone’s touch controls. It’s hard to describe, just go play it, and if you want to play it on your iPhone then try the free demo or buy it for $3.

You have to direct the energy into the rectangles to win. Each rectangle adds to the beautiful harmony.

The game progresses in difficulty as multiple colors are added, then black wholes and other modifiers.

Battle Bears for iPhone

simon | Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

This game is awesome. You are a teddy bear who is trapped in enemy territory. You surround yourself with sand bags, grab a rifle and start defending yourself from wave after wave of cute bears trying to hug you. Every five waves there is a hilarious cut scene followed by a boss battle. These are probably the most ridiculously hilarious cutscenes and creative boss creatures ever. The whole game is worth playing just for the cutscenes. The whole game is very well done, the controls are solid, the shooting feels great, lots of great guns like a flame thrower, bearzooka and chaingun. Try the free demo or pay $1 for the full version in the App Store.

This is my favorite boss, the Marecraft carrier. You get a chaingun to defend yourself from an onslaught of unicorns on magic carpets. “I only have one… hundred thousand shots”.

Let’s Golf for the iPhone

simon | Games, Review, Software, Sports/Outdoors | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

This game reminds me a lot of the Hot Shots Golf franchise on the PlayStation. It is a very polished golf game with great graphics, controls, and gameplay. The quickplay mode lets you knock out a 3-hole game in less than 10 minutes. $2 in the App Store or try the free demo.

LetsGolf

A timing game is used to determine the power and accuracy of your shot.

You can also put spin on the ball.

Read the flowing lines of the green to line up the putt.

DizzyMission for iPhone is a Moon Lander Fan’s Dream

simon | Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Do you love Moon Lander? Then you will love DizzyMission because it has the same game play and controls except tons of different levels. You can thrush up and from side to side. But instead of just landing safely you have to navigate through alien tunnels to reach the landing pad safely. It entertained me for a few hours. It is free in the App Store.

Driver for the iPhone

simon | Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Driver for the original PlayStation was an awesome game. And here it is remade for the iPhone, with better graphics than the PS1. You are an undercover cop working as a driver for criminals. You are a getaway driver for bank jobs and you are frequently running from the cops. I just finished a fun mission where you have to chase down and ram an armored car, rescue the escaping criminal and drive him to safety. There are also several driving mini games where you have to smash a fleeing car or lose a tail. $5 in the App Store but there is a free demo.

The hills in San Fran are excellent for getting air.

Driver

The cops got me.

Driver

A while I blogged about how excited I was that GTA: China Town Wars was coming to the iPhone. Well it came out and I spent $10 on it and played it for a few hours but then stopped. The driving controls suck, I’d rather just stay in the car and do awesome driver missions with a 3D car view than a crappy overhead view. Driver > GTA:CTW.

Cyberrunner game for iPhone

simon | Games, Review, Software | Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I like this game because it’s slightly like Mirror’s Edge in that it is first person and you are running and dodging obstacles and jumping on bridges. Try to make the best distance without slamming into a wall or falling. $0.99 in the App Store.
