iPhone 3GS Augmented Reality

When I tell people about the iPhones digital compass, most people say ‘meh’.  Then I try to explain how this opens up the fascinating world of augmented reality, which is very hard to impart with words.  Check out these awesome vidoes.

Nearest Tubes locates subways in the UK.  I want this for the DC Metro.

Pocket Universe shows you a star map.

Idunno about this one, you can see where person’s a located and then call them? Why not just call them? If it’s a person’s realtime location then that’s cool, but it’s probably just their home address.

Imagine the implications of such ubiquitous AR!!!!!!! Eventually you will perceive the world exclusively through augmented reality optics, the naked eye is for losers.

Brain-Twitter Interface

Watch the video below to see Adam Wilson, A University of Wisconsin-Madison biomedical engineering doctoral student, tweet at eight characters per minute using an EEG.  This is a great step forward in human computer interfaces, and will also help paralyzed people communicate. Previously, users could only type about one character per minute when controlling a mouse cursor to select letters, Wilson’s new keyboard method allows users to type up to eight characters per minute.

How Crucial.com overcharged for shipping by 378%

simon | Hardware, Review, Tech, internet | Friday, September 12th, 2008

While ordering RAM I chose overnight shipping for $12.99. I decided to use my FedEx account for this. I was then charged $49.16.

Crucial failed to:

  1. Create a clear checkout form
  2. Validate that the form was filled out correctly
  3. Process my selection of $12.99
  4. Notify me of the correct shipping charges

These are basic web design principles for reputable e-commerce. Crucial’s stance on this issue was that I was a fault for filling out the requested fields on their web form. After hours of phone calls, chat support, and emails Crucial never offered an apology for overcharging me or for their lack of communication.
